Why Being Class Secretary is Cool, and How to Become One

Class of 1974
1974 Class Secretary Mary Flanagan Williamson, third from right, with classmates in Washington, DC, 2005.

You might be asking, “What do class secretaries have to do?” It’s all too simple and no prior experience needed! Be the “Go-To” person(s) for your classmates! Class secretaries can be either male or female; and there can be more than one class secretary for your class (team work)! What you want to do with your class is up to you and your classmates!

Some suggestions for the class secretary role are:

1) Help locate your “lost” class members by reaching out to classmates 2) Encourage your classmates to send news and photos for web posting 3) Keep the Board updated on all email address changes and report newly-found alumni so they can keep their email address database current 4) Assist in sending reminders and messages

Also, for individual class-year reunions, the Board will help classes make their reunion happen by assisting with web posting and provide pertinent information.

For me personally, being the Class of 1974 Secretary since June 2005 has been a blast!!! Mind you, I took on the role as my class secretary with no idea what I was going to do or how I was going to do it! I just knew that I wanted to round everyone up again and have fun with them. So far, the role has been simple for me because they have been supportive of me. Aside from locating some “lost” classmates and keeping track of contact information, the class has pretty much guided itself to where it stands now – with our own upcoming class reunion this summer! We have found over the past 30+years that we have not changed much; and collectively, we’ve picked up where we left off, which is to continue on with our class goals.

Remember that it is great to re-connect with the classmates you know and it’s never too late to make new friends with the classmates you don’t know. Have fun with your class. Volunteer now to be your class secretary!!!
