Bruce Dalcher AIS class of 1975 brupdal@yahoo.com

Bruce Dalcher was at AIS from 1963 to 1971 in the class of 1975. As I recall, ours was the BIG class because there were more than 50 of us.

Eight years in India did a splendid job of leaving me, like so many others, remarkably unprepared for a return to the States. I had one year (9th grade) at a DC public school, a real hellhole where I literally could not understand what many of the students were saying. Then things got a little better: my sister Sara ('73) and I switched to Walt Whitman HS in Bethesda. Even though it was huge, it was vastly better than the DC school, and I even found a couple of AIS classmates there: David Ernst (I think) and Eliza Dixon.

I went to the US Coast Guard academy for a couple of years where I accumulated a great many demerits, then had the sense to resign and go finish a degree at the Univ of Florida. But having no other plan, I went back to the Coast Guard (OCS this time).

That continued, with one interruption from a broken leg that didn't want to heal, until 2003 when I retired. Along the way, I picked up a BSc in math and a law degree. Since 2003, I've been slowly getting going as a solo practitioner with a focus on maritime law.

Just as I left the Coast Guard behind, I met the right gal and we married in 2005, my first try at this married thing. She's a PhD (linguistics: phonetics and phonology) and had a job offer in the UK, so in 2006 we moved from DC to London, and now live in a small town between London & Cambridge.

There you have it! I would enjoy hearing from any old classmates. I can be reached at brupdal@yahoo.com.
