Seiichi Sugiyama AIS class of 1975 sugi-01@jcom.home.ne.jp

August 15, 2005

My Dear Friends,

My Name is Seiichi Sugiyama.

I would like to thank AIS-AES Reunion Members, especially Ms. KC Gray Siebert...and Ms. Mary Novak, class 1974 secretary. Their works are so wonderful! Since I was partly in your class from 1968 till 1970, perhaps most of you from the class of 1974 did not have a chance to meet me. Ms. Sunaina Suneja was the only one I could recognize in your pictures.

I am a Japanese, living in Tokyo, Japan.

I was in New Delhi from November 1967 to November 1970, and was in AIS from April 1968 (4th grade) until October 1970 (8th grade), after finishing 6th grade of Elementary School of New Delhi which was supported by the Japanese Embassy.

After comming back from India, I went to Akikawa High School (boarding school of Tokyo Municipal), and then graduated from Sophia University (Chemical Department). I went to see India in Year 2000 together with my daughter, 30 years after I left India. I was so surprised to find my old friends with the attachment of AES (Now the name is changed from AIS to AES) on the web page.

First, I contacted Mr.Sanjay Gupta, one of my best friend in my child hood, now living in USA. He introduced me the e-mail address of Ms.Sunana Suneja, whom I could meet her again after 30 years in New Delhi.

I visited AES (former American International School of New Delhi), and the old house where I used to live.

Many things were changed, but in many places there were some points where nothing has been changed even after 30 years.

When I got into AIS, I was supposed to be in the 6th grade but was put into 4th grade cause I could not understand English at all at that time. Mrs. Margaret Garg was the Principal, and Mr. Thomas Reeves took care of me sometimes in the afternoon, teaching me English with pictures (counseling). I do not remember who my first class teacher was in my first class (4th grade, April 1968), but I still remember that the music teacher was Dr.Estabrook, and Mr.George Thomas was the PE teacher. The following people were my classmates then:

Mohan Singh,
David Garg,
Anil Singh,
Ajoy Vachher,
Marshal King,
Ashok Nimgade,
Christina Owens
etc.

What I remember well is that we used to sing all the National Anthems of our classmates every morning.

After the summer vacation, we moved to 5th grade (teacher was Mrs. Satin), and 3 months later I could jump into 6th grade (teacher was Mrs.Bahree), the class which I was in until October 1970 (8th grade).

The classmates at that time were (from pictures and address book)

The teachers I still remember are:

Mrs.Strong: She taught us about Molecular Periodical Table, which I started to be interested in Chemistry.
Mrs.Satin: Her daughter, Jill Satin was one of our class mate. Mr. Thomas: He taught us soccer, and we loved it.
Mrs. Whitney: She liked Japanese movies, especially of Kurosawa. I was impressed that we had Haiku, the Japanese Poem at that time.
Mr .Housman: He was very strict about how we wore our shirts. Also we had a lot of multiple choice homework, and then had exactly the same questions in our exam.
Nurseryman: Her son, John was our class mate.
Mrs. Garg: Her sons, David Garg, and Malcom Garg were my class mate. I can never forget the day when we were invited for glider club she joined, on the birthday of Malcolm. It was so quiet, and we flue over our school.
Dr.Estabrook: She used to wear sari, and her smile was nice. I don't know why, but my parents and I went to see her piano concert once.

If anybody who recollected me, please send a e-mail to me at sugi-01@jcom.home.ne.jp.

By the way, I am working in a small Japanese trading company called Morishita & Co., Ltd., which is specialized in functional and fine chemicals in Japan. I am the General Manager for the overseas market development, and in charge of Korea and Taiwan at the moment. I often go to Korea and Taiwan, and seldom go to Europe and USA. If you have a chance to come to Tokyo, please do not forget to contact me.

Last but no least, there were some Japanese people in AIS in those days, and I was so happy to find the Mini-Bio of Chikako Tsuruta in this Reunion in the class of 1972. I saw her name in Interpretation of the international news broad cast, and was wonderring if it was her.

There are many othere peopel whom I would like to know, how they are doing now (like Ms. Chieko Kajiyama, Mr.Eiji Nakano, Ms.Yurie Uyama, Haruko Tsuruta etc.) and woudl like to hear from the people who has seen this Mini-Bio.
