Robert V. Astley, AES 2007 ROBERT VERNON ASTLEY, Class of 2007
11 DEC 1988 - 7 FEB 2013

Message from his family:
Robert was taken from us too early, at only
24 years old - only four days after being diagnosed with leukemia.
Robert was one of the kindest souls you could have ever hoped to meet. A gentle, kind-hearted, loving, thoughtful, considerate, and funny young man who looked after those around him, put others first, always had a smile and never failed to make you laugh. He was a blessing in all our lives, an amazing person we will all miss forever and never forget.

In memory of Robert, his family set up a fundraiser with Bloodline (formerly Leukemia and Lymphoma Research).

Sad News - Jim Rizzie, Class of 1975

West Coast Reunion
Jim Rizzie, in the green vest, with his mother Peg, sister Carol, and brother Dan at a family reunion in 2011.

Dan writes: "My brother Jim died December 17, 2012. He was 56 years old.

Jim (Class of 1975) always had a story to tell. He had the gift of gab down to a
fine art. We will remember his great sense of humor and constant willingness to
help others. Jim's heart was big and he wore it for all the world to see.

Our family invites you to tell us something you recall about Jim. Mom, Dad,
Carol, Peter, Dan and Susan will miss our brother and son and hope he is finally
at peace.

The Rizzies - kids and parents - energized the AIS community in the 1960s and
early 1970s, and have remained close to their friends from New Delhi over the decades." Contact Dan Rizzie at rizvex@optonline.net.

Sad News

From Paul Rieger, Class of 1970: "I am e-mailing you to let the AIS community
know that my dad, John Rieger, died. I'm attaching the death notice that
appeared in the Washington Post.

Dad had been in the West Falls assisted living section of the Falcon's Landing military/state department retirement community in Sterling, Virginia. He had a minor stroke Saturday morning, 9 June 2012 at breakfast. They sent him to
Reston Hospital ER in an ambulance. My sister, Annie (Class of 1972), met him there. Long and short: he died quietly, peacefully, purposefully with Annie holding
his hand.

My older sister Patty (ACS, Beirut, '63), who lives in Sebastopol, California; and
I are in town at Annie's helping with the funeral arrangements.

I thought the AIS folks would like to know about dad, since he was Admin officer
at the Embassy from 1968-1974 and his office was in charge of AIS. Also, he accompanied us on the 1995 AIS Delhi reunion tour. Ciao."

Sad News

Studwell India Arrival

There's some sad news to share from the Studwell clan (Cherie Studwell Lazaroff, Class of 1965; Tom Studwell, Class of 1967; Kathy Studwell Sabino, Class of 1971; Philip Studwell, Class of 1973, and David Studwell, Pat Sue Studwell Vaughan, too young for school):

Our father, the Rev. William A. Studwell, died suddenly and unexpectedly the morning of Sunday, January 22, 2012 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He was called in 1959 to be the first minister for the Union Church in New Delhi, an international
and interdenominational congregation, and we all arrived that August.

During our six years in India, the church included Americans and other English-speaking foreigners serving India in its effort to raise the standard of living for its citizens, as well as Indian Christians who preferred an American style of worship.
AIS was a small and growing school when we arrived, and Bill and Peg Studwell engaged many of our students in camping at Pahalgam, retreats to Sat Tal, dramatics, and service projects through the Senior Youth Fellowship (also MYF).
Peg (who died in 1973) also served on the school board and as a middle school English teacher.

Bill and his wife Barbara enjoyed meeting with friends and alumni at the 2001 reunion in Washington. The extended family gathers in Orlando, Florida on
Saturday, February 11 to celebrate Bill Studwell's life.

Sincerely,
Cherie Studwell Lazaroff
