Joe Bettinger Class of 1966
June 9, 2007
Hello, I'm Joe Bettinger, Class of '66.
After reading some of the bios on the AIS/AES Alumni Network website, I thought I should write an update myself.
In 2005, after living in the San Francisco Bay Area and working 30 years for the same company (Beckman Coulter), I decided to retire and move to Tucson, Arizona. Upon retiring, the 'company' made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I now work part time giving technical support over the phone from my home. Simi-retired does not sound as good as retired but I only have to talk on the phone for a few hours a day and the company gives me benefits and money…Too cool!
My wife, Fran, and I have spent the past 18 months restoring the family home here in Tucson. The property had fallen into disrepair and despair but the views were so spectacular and the memories so warm and fuzzy that we decided to take a whack at a full restoration. We even added a few frills like remote everything and a painting of Pele, the goddess of Volcanoes, over the living room fireplace.
We are now in the process of exploring the paradise that is our new home state. We call ourselves Calizonies. We also like to refer to California as the 'old country'. We find ourselves saying things like, 'but it's a dry heat' and 'the desert is beautiful'. We are also learning all the common names of the cactus, plants and wild life we find in out back yard. So far we have seen a rattlesnake, tarantulas, a gila monster, lots of javelina (a type of wild boar), coyotes, roadrunners, quail, rabbits…you get the idea.
If you are passing through Tucson, it would be fun to get together.
Life is good.
