"It makes us brothers." In the emails below friends reminisce about the ritual of late night airport send offs. Many thanks to Bob, Eric, Paul, Thom, and Keith for sharing this photo and email chain.

Airport send off circa 1969. (L-R) starting w/ the back row Mike Bennett, (unidentified person) Doug Pope, Keith Eller, Curt Minehart, Mike Laughlin, Carol Rizzie, Bob Butani, Frank Ratermann, George Taylor, and Leigh Sioris. For more AIS pictures circa 1969 see Yearbook, and Taka's PowerPoint Adventures.

Email from Bob Butani:
Leigh Sioris sent me this photo (he's the good looking kid in front). This may have been taken in approx May-June 1969. Whenever one of the kids was leaving to go back home, a bunch of us would go out to Palam Airport to see the person off. I think most flights at that time left in the middle of the night, so naturally we would party till it came time leave. (L-R) starting w/ the back row Mike Bennett, (unidentified person) Doug Pope, Keith Eller, Curt Minehart, Mike Laughlin, Carol Rizzie, Bob Butani, Frank Raterman, George Taylor, and Leigh.

Email from Eric Hols:
Awesome picture! I love those shots that immediately trigger a common memory for all of us - in this case, the ritual of the midnight flight of Pan Am 001 from Palam that we all participated in many times, usually saying sad goodbyes... to friends, relatives, girlfriends, boyfriends, ....or in this case, a chopra grandfather gandu pudi-wallah!

We need an after pix from today [of Leigh Sioris]. I'd like to know how a long-haired, emaciated guinea pig can turn into a good-looking, no-haired Greek bull? Isn't it? --RIEGER

And I left in February or March of 69 just before Leigh and then hooked up with Leigh in Chevy Chase, Maryland while Leigh attended Bethesda Chevy Chase High School with Nils Lofgren of Estreet fame. I was in Langley High School, McLean VA and attended with Tom Erlichman of Watergate fame and Steve Rehnquist of supreme court fame. I don't remember too many people coming out to see me leave but I remember my sister Krista had to be pulled out of Glen's arms and we held the whole plane up hanging out to the bitter end with Glen and Curt and Nancy Minehart.

Email from Keith Eller
Amazing picture of the place and time! It makes us brothers. I forgot it was called Palam. I don't remember being there! Thanks for sharing.
