Its an annual tradition at AES to welcome our new and returning faculty with a special ceremony, where we light a diya (Indian lamp) to mark the start of the new school year. New faculty are then introduced and given a tika (worn on the forehead), and a garland is placed around their neck. Returning faculty make connections with new faculty through common places, schools and interests. Most of all, we celebrate how enriched we are by the diversity of our community!

Twenty-six years after he started country-hopping, one writer reflects on a childhood spent in transit. AES alumni, Sebastian Modak writes: Born in the U.S. to an Indian father and a Colombian mother,
by the age of seven, I had already moved three times: from New Jersey to Hong Kong to Australia and onwards to India, where Id spend five years before moving to Indonesia for high school.

Congratulations to published author and AES seventh grader, Sagar Castleman, whose first book of short stories, The Fruit Seller, recently released! Sagar
and his classmates in Mr Kuehn's Humanities class celebrated with a little cake in the American Embassy School MS/HS Library. We asked Sagar what inspired him to write a book: "In India there are a lot of interesting things you don't find in other places. And
I thought people should know about that." Check
out your copy and enjoy, or find it at your favorite bookseller.

Dear Fellow AISers/AESers,
My name is John Carey (Class of 1995), and I attended AES from 1987-1992
(5th grade to 9th grade). Despite not graduating from AES, the memories and friends from those years remain an integral part of me. The school was enriching and challenging, and the teachers and staff nurtured all of us and made us better world citizens.
When I speak of SAISA sports conventions to Pakistan or wonderful trips to the Woodstock School and mini-course trips to Rishikesh and Ranthambore National Park, friends are surprised at my casual tone, which reinforces the idea of how fortunate we all are.
This brings me to my reason for reaching out today. I am running for the Virginia House of Delegates in the Democratic primary on June 13th, and I would appreciate your help spreading the word about the campaign.
